Dam West Campground, Carlyle, IL

We are back again. Some reservations were cancelled because of high lake levels. But we found a dry spot for a few days.

The beaches are closed, boat ramps are closed, and a lot of campsites are closed due to the high lake. But I guess the reason the lake was built was to control flooding downstream.

We went to Altamont, IL. The Van Nationals are being held here this weekend. I think we went to two Van Nationals. 1976 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. And in 1986 in Duquion, IL.  Some things have changed, others haven't.  We didn't go into the fairgrounds, vans only. We tried to see the parade in town but I guess we were late.  We did get to see a few vans that were out and about.

NBC News even did a story on this Truck-in. I think they had about 500 - 600 vans here. I believe when we went to the Nationals in 1976 there were 7,000 vans.

Sunday:
Nice and warm today.

I did do a few miles today on my bike. This was zero in April when I started for the year. 500 miles so far this year. With this heat that may be it.

Playing games and eating good.

Our sites that we have reserved for the next 6 weeks are all closed right now due to high water and the lake level is not going down right now.

Carlyle Lake, Dam West Campground

We are back again. Only this time everything looks different. The lake is way up and several campsites are under water. Luckily our site is high enough. Now we have a lake view across the street instead of other campers.

We planned to stay 7 nights and then go home for 3 nights and then go to Coles Creek Campground. We checked our site for next week and it's under about 6' of water. Then I got a notice from the Corps of Engineers that reservation was cancelled.

I don't know how fast the lake will go down and how long it will take them to get the sites ready. Some transformers and electric boxes are under water. We have more reservations here later too.

We may be broadening our campground stays to other places.

We extended our stay here a couple days since no one was coming on our site. We still had a good time doing the usual. Bike riding, eating, relaxing, visiting, and playing games.

We are not sure where or when our next trip is but it probably won't be long.
